The DOC campsite at Putangirua Pinnacles is in a stunning location in the far south of the North Island.

There is a small camping area, with a toilet, at the entrance of the access road, but you will really want to drive on down to the main camping area, with its dramatic cliff face backdrop, and access to the Pinnacles walk.

However, the front camping area did have better network coverage for both Vodafone and Spark.

The facilities were good - basic DOC long-drop toilets and no showers.

We visited on a beautiful Autumn afternoon, but needed to get back to Martinborough and didn't have time to walk to the Pinnacles - something I now regret. Still, it's also a good excuse to visit this area again.

The walk to the Pinnacles Lookout takes 1.5 hours return, as does the walk to the Pinnacles along the streambed.

There is a longer Loop Track with views over Lake Onoke (Lake Ferry), the Onoke Spit, and the Whatarangi Cliffs, that takes around 4 hours for the round trip.

This is a great location to enjoy our natural environment, and to get some exercise as well.

The toilets at the main area are now flush toilets, check the back one if no paper in the front one. The walk along the streambed takes 2 hours and uneven footing as you get further along. To get to the real LOTRs feel, the incline goes up and up, so have good walking shoes on. Jandals are not an option.
