The Ke Kopanhou Reserve at Owhiro Bay has a large parking area with public toilets where Freedom Camping is allowed for motor caravanners.

The reserve is also the DOC Taputeranga Marine Reserve, so you can't fish or collect shellfish anywhere within the boundary displayed on the DOC sign. Exploring the rocky coastline and the pools of water for regenerating marine life is a great way to spend the day.

You can also explore the Red Rocks Walkway, which stretches for many kilometres around the isolated coastline. It's also possible to drive, but not for large motorhomes as you might easily get stuck in the soft sand along the beach..

DOC have a display area in the facilities building with posters describing the history of the area. The toilets are modern and well maintained.

This is an excellent location, and is well used by both motor caravanners and day visitors.

There is a New World supermarket about 6 minutes drive away at the Island Bay suburb, and a public dump station nearby in Happy Valley Road, so you are well provided for if you'd like to stay for the maximum of 4 days in a calendar month.
