The Poutu Intake is part of the Genesis Energy power station complex. There parking areas are available to self-contained motor caravanners to park overnight.
This is an isolated location. Access to the river is potentially dangerous as the river level and flow can change at any time.
You can drive across the intake structure, and park in the carpark on the other side. It was also being used a river rafting company to access the river.
There is also a small long drop toilet, and a reserve with picnic tables.
