Parking in the only area available
Whakamaru Domain is a large level reserve that is normally available to self-contained motor caravanners for freedom camping in a peaceful rural environment.
However, when we visited in late autumn, the domain area was planted in a commercial crop by the local farmer. The gate was still signposted as 'Camping Area', but camping was clearly off the agenda.
I imagine that this is just a temporary situation, but it would pay to check with the Whakamaru Domain, or the Taupo i-Site (0800 525-382), before planning to stay there.
You can still park in the reserve by the public toilets, but this is not very level.
