Ray's Rest is a designated Freedom Camping area along the beachfront about halfway between Kaiaua and Miranda.

It's a very popular location for motor caravanners, and almost always has campers parked along the waters edge.

It is also an internationally important wetland area which is used as a stopover for many of Miranda's migratory birds. For this reason, dogs are strictly prohibited.

We stopped only to relax and have some dinner before continuing our journey back to Auckland.

There was a beautiful sunset, and I'd imagine there was also be some really nice sunrises over the Coromandel Peninsula should you be there, and awake, in the early morning.

Note that dogs are not allowed because this coast is a bird sanctuary. Also, there is no freedom camping allowed at the southern end of the reserve. Where you can park is well signposted.

UPDATE: 19-Jan-2018

We've now visited and stayed overnight on a number of different occassions - sometimes to meet up with friends, and sometimes just because it's one of our favourite locations.

There are enthusiastic motor caravanners staying there even during winter. While it can get cold and windy, it's stunning on a fine day!

6-Oct-2018 even though there were lots of motorhomes there was still plenty of flat parking on grass/sand to choose from 20m from water's edge. Waking up to the sunrise over the Coromandel was magical.
