Whiritoa Surf Club has a small parking area with public toilets where motor caravanners can freedom park overlooking the beach.

There are no signs for freedom camping, but the local people are pretty relaxed as long as you are not causing a problem for people accessing the surf club.

This is likely to be a very popular surfing location over the summer holidays, so best to avoid visiting during that time. It was very quiet in early spring when we called in.

The public toilets were clean and well maintained. The adjacent reserve includes a gas barbeque and a children's playground.

The golden sand, surf beach is stunning!

Kia ora, We stayed for 1 night in our campervan (fully self contained) the first week of Jan 2021... Was a lovely beach, friendly locals and would normally highly recommend visiting. However, we had a terrible experience with a woman who lives across from the Whiritoa Beach Club (28 Kon Tiki Rd). She was taking photos of us and peering in to our van from her balcony with binoculars. It was extremely invasive and very inappropriate. I would save yourself the headache and don't stay in front of that home. After she had taken a few photos of us and was using her binoculars to watch us (she even waved at us) I approached her home. I stayed on the curb side of course and asked if she wanted to have a discussion, I asked what her problem was and said that was she was doing was really terrible and that if she had a problem with us she should simply have a conversation with us, so that it could be resolved amicably amongst all parties. She wasn't pleased that we brushed our teeth outside our vehicle and claimed we were leaving our DNA in her area. We apologised and let her know that we are very environmentally conscious, we use all natural toothpaste and we would never want to disrupt the natural environment or disrespect any people that live there. She was waving around a Donald Trump bobble head pen and kept insisting so many campers/ travellers stay and leave trash around etc. The neighbour at # 30 was outside (Liz and Chris' place/ there is a big sign) and said we were bearing the brunt of many people who had come before us and left a mess etc. We completely agreed with these people that it's awful people behave that way - but if she wants to educate those who stay/ having a conversation is the way to do it.... taking numerous photos and peering in at us with binoculars is not the way to do it. Other than this unfortunate event it was a lovely place to stay... just be mindful of this extremely rude woman - she has a bee in her bonnet, clearly too much time on her hands and will try and find any reason possible to disrupt your stay. Cheers, Jessica (Auckland)
