The Waikawa Recreation Reserve is a large grassed area in a small rural seaside community. There a hall, a public toilets, and fresh water available. The reserve is available for freedom camping, and the large sealed parking area is very convenient for even large motorhomes and caravans.

While the parking area was not directly on the water's edge, it is still a good option if you are exploring the Catlins. The public toilets were spacious and clean, and it is a plus having fresh water available.

We had spent most of the day driving down from Balclutha, much of that time in blustery, rainy weather. By the time we got to Waikawa Bay, the sky was showing signs of clearing, and we were tempted to have an early dinner and park here for the night. But, in the end, we decided to keep going to Fortrose.
