The south-eastern corner of Lake Whakatipu has a large reserve where self-contained motor caravanners can park overnight.

It's a really pretty location with parking right next to, or overlooking, the lake edge. The on-grass parking was quite uneven, but it would be possible to find somewhere suitable.

The ground was quite soft when we visited in autumn, and we didn't want to risk getting stuck with our front-wheel drive motorhome. The drive out to the main road was a bit marginal as well - for the same reason.

The council were doing some maintenance work while we were there, and we were welcomed to the sound of a busy chainsaw.

That would be a temporary abherration, but we decided to continue on up the Kingston Road to Queenstown.

Unfortunately, we were to later realize that this was our only opportunity to park overnight by this lake.
