Certified self-contained vans can park overnight in any council parking area that is not sign-posted as prohibited.

You risk a $200 fine for ignoring the rules.

Whangarei District Council also provides four designated freedom camping areas for self-contained vehicles
as well as 18 sites that permit non self-contained camping options.
Parking spaces and van length are limited at these sites and they are very popular, so be sure to arrive early
if you want to park overnight. We recommend you avoid these during the summer season.

The Whangarei Falls is an iconic attraction, situated in a large reserve with a walk to the waterfall from the parking area. It is one of 6 waterfalls in the Whangarei district. 

This is a really popular attraction, and was really busy when we called in on a sunny Monday afternoon.  It's an easy walk to the waterfall, and if you're looking for some extra exercise, you can complete the loop walk, which takes around half and hour.

Note that the waterfall is weather dependant, and there might not be any water flowing during a long dry spell in Summer.

Also be carefull to lock your van whlle there as thieving has been a problem.

Overnight camping is allowed for self-contained motorhomes. You need to check the sign, as the only area allocated for overnight parking is near the carpark exit.
