Certified self-contained vans can park overnight in any council parking area that is not sign-posted as prohibited.
For complete details check wdc.govt.nz/camping. Check for onsite signs on arrival.
You risk a $200 fine for ignoring the rules.
Whangarei District Council also provides four designated freedom camping areas for self-contained vehicles
as well as 18 sites that permit non self-contained camping options.
Parking spaces and van length are limited at these sites and they are very popular, so be sure to arrive early
if you want to park overnight. We recommend you avoid these during the summer season.
Public toilets
Whananaki North Reserve is a stunning location for motor caravanners to enjoy. You can park overlooking the Whananaki Inlet and stay overnight for a maximum stay of 1 night.
We called in on a sunny spring afternoon and were very tempted to stay. There was another motorhome there when we arrivew, with two more arriving soon after.
There was plenty of room for even large vans, and clean public toilets if needed. While rubbish bins are on site, campers are requested to take their own rubbish with them.
You don't have to be self-contained to stay, but be sure to park in the designated area.
Alternatively, if you are self-contained, you can overnight in the boat ramp parking area.
