We drove all along the Whangaruru North peninsula to Puriri Bay, not realizing that it was closed over winter. We could have checked of course, but we were still finding our way around exploring New Zealand over the winter months of June through to August.
In any event, the campsite looked great on a clear sunny day, but we could see why it wouldn't be safe to park on the grass over winter. The ground was quite soft, and getting stuck there with no one around could result in a longer than expected stay.
The facilities were good. The beach looked great. We enjoyed walking around the site, and will come back again when the weather gets warmer.
