Whangarei District Council welcomes freedom campers, and provides designated freedom camping locations
for certified self-contained and non-self-contained vans. Parking spaces and van length may be limited
Certified self-contained vans can also park overnight at any council parking area that is not sign-posted otherwise.
There are 38 prohibited sites. Check wdc.govt.nz for the latest information. You risk a $200 fine for ignoring signs.
Whananaki North Boat Ramp has a stunning view over the Whananaki Estuary, and include a sealed parking area were self-contained motor caravanners can park overnight,
This is a great location if you're travelling with a boat or kayaks. The fishing is good in the estuary, and it's a nice alternative if the Whananaki Reserve is already full.
The Whangarei District Council's policy on these public parking areas is that, if there is no sign forbidding overnight parking, then certified self-contained motor caravanners can park overnight for a maximum of 3 nights and a limit of 2 vans.
