There is a small rest area along Mangakahia Rd on the country road from Mangatapere to Kaikohe. Self-contained motor caravanners can park overnight.
There is a river running past, with some children swimming in it when we stopped to have a look.
It's just off the road, so there is likely to be some traffic noise if you want to stay overnght. It's also a bit isolated and there is no mobile coverage.
It is a very pleasant drive through farmland, so this would be a good place to stop for a lunch break if you're exploring this area.
There is also another picnic area at Twin Bridges, where you are further away from the road.
