The Houhora Tavern promotes itself as being New Zealand's northern-most pub, offering good pub meals, and the usual drinks, TV, and pool tables. It also provides low cost overnight parking for motor caravanners, including powered sites, and hot showers.
We called in to check out the overnight parking available at the pub in early Spring, expecting that parking would be limited to the ashfelt parking area in front of the pub.
However, the owners have just developed a level grassed area beside the pub, setting it up with powered parking sites, and also providing showers in a small building close by.
Right on the harbour edge, this is a prime location for cost conscious motor caravanners to use a a base for exploring the Far North.
The old post office and dance hall next door, may be derelect, but they go back to the pioneering days when the Dalmation gumdiggers were makng a living from the kauri gum buried underground.
Still owned by the descendants of the original Evans family, it's a shame that these buildings haven't been restored. But at least they are still standing, and provide some suggestion of life at that time.
