Pukenui Holiday Park is set back from the main road and is just a short walk from the Pukenui shopping centre and wharf.
This is a prime location if you want to try you luck fishing from the wharf, or if you just want a good meal in the local restaurant. Their fish n chips are pretty good as well.
We called in at the beginning of Spring, to find that there were still quite a few campers checked in.
Two of them returned while were there (empty handed) from trying their luck fishing from the wharf, and we enjoyed chatting with them and the caretaker who was filling in for the owners while they took some time off.
Like the Wagener Holiday Park, the campsite focuses on providing a great Kiwi camping experience.
The facilities are clean and tidy, and well laid out And where else can you walk to one of the best fishing wharfs in the country, with a great local cafe, grocery shopping and a liquor store?
It's an excellent base for touring further north, as well as around the local area.
And the local area is worth exploring. In addition to fishing, you can collect a variety of shellfish, charter game and sport fishing, or diving experiences, hire kayaks, go horse trekking, or play golf.
There are also a variety of local attractions, like the Kauri Gumdiggers Park, and Emu and Ostrich farm, DOC walks, and a fresh water lake.
Most overseas visitors take the coach tour up to Cape Reinga, and drive right past Houhora. The Kiwis who know, stop and spend some time here.
