There is a large DOC campsite at the Rarangi Conservation Area. This is a nice location, with plenty of room for parking, and well off the beaten track.
The facilities were good, and this was a popular location when we visited in early Autumn. It's just a short walk over the sand dunes to the beach. However, you can only hear the waves, as you can't see the beach from the camping area.
Mobile coverage was marginal for both Vodafone and Spark.
We also planned to check out the DOC campsite at Whites Bay, but decided against it after reading the road sign leading to the bay.
