Te Paerahi Beach Reserve has toilets and drinking water for freedom campers. You can walk to a large sandy beach.

This was one of those unexpected finds for us. It's a nice, reasonably sheltered reserve that was being well used even in mid autumn. The Central Hawkes Bay District Council has provided good toilets and fresh water, and you can camp for free.

I imagine it would be full over the summer holiday season, so best to come in spring or autumn if you want to be sure of a place.

We spent some time chatting to a group of friends who had been coming here for holidays for several years.
