Mt Cook Alpine Salmon also acts as the local information centre. There is a large sealed carpark and a specialty shop for local salmon.

It's primarily set up for tourist buses, but was also very popular with other visitors, both for the fresh salmon, and for the views over Lake Pukaki.

There is also a statue commemorating the Himalayan Tahr, which was introduced into the Mt Cook area in the early 1900s to complement the deer for hunting. New Zealand has the only substantial herd of wild tahr outside of their native India and Nepal, and is the only country where tahr can be hunted in a free-range natural alpine environment.
