Access to the beach - on a bleak mid-winter day

Access to the beach - on a bleak mid-winter day

We called in to the Bowentown Beach Holiday Park while working our way down the Waihi Beach coast and checking out all of the places available for motor caravanners to enjoy and stay overnight.

It was a cold, blustery winters day, but we were immediately impressed with the location and the quality of their facilities. These include a luxurious spa pool, and you can book in for massage and a variety of beauty treatments. There are bikes and kayaks available for hire, and the local fishing is great.

You can go for long walks along the beach, follow the tracks that weave through the Bowentown domain, and visit the ancient pa site where there are magnicent views over the harbour and coastland.

On a blustery cold day in mid-winter, we weren't tempted to do any of that, but are looking forward to visiting when the weather gets warmer.

If you're not travelling in a motorhome, the cabins are some of the most luxurious and well appointed that we have seen.

This was a really interesting visit for us as it underlined how campsites and free parking areas can co-exist. Anzac Bay is just around the corner, and is availlable for free overnight parking, potentially taking paying customers away from the holiday park.

So, here's my suggestion for enthusiastic free campers - come and park over at Anzac Bay. There is plenty to enjoy and you can stay for up to 3 consequtive nights.

When you get low on power, water, and need to make use of a dump station, check into the Holiday Park for a couple of nights. With what you save when free parking, you can spend on some luxury pampering - a win-win for everyone!

This is probably not a good plan over the summer school holidays, as you are unlikely to be able to book in for just a couple of nights. Plan this for spring and autumn - you might see us there...

New Zealand has some great locations to enjoy around our coastline. Bowentown Beach, with its 'killer combination' of quality free parking, and a luxurious campsite, would have to rate up there with the very best.
