AUCKLAND: FRANKLIN

We called in to the Sandspit Beach Holiday Park on a sunny Saturday morning in mid-winter. Located next to the Waiuku Yacht Club reserve, and tucked away down a long driveway, the campsite wasn't immediately obvious. However, the walk down the driveway proved to be worthwhile and very interesting.

The owner was busy vacuuming the office when we knocked on the door. He was one of those iconic 'Kiwi' characters, totally laid back but very interesting to talk to. HIs passion is boats and the sea, had travelled widely, and still has a large boat moored out in the harbour.

We had a really interesting discussion about boats that had been wrecked coming into the Manukau harbour. Having lived in the area for over 20 years, he also helped us to track down an old friend living in Waiuku who we had last seen over 20 years ago.

He was now rather more interested in enjoying a laid back lifestyle, and wasn't too concerned about promoting his campsite or making it more obvious to find. His comment was that, the people who know him and like what he has to offer, know how to find the campsite.

It is one of the earliest campsites to be set up, and the cottages are over 100 years old, and are mostly used by long term renters. There was not a lot of room for motorhomes or caravans, and parking is on the hill a short distance from the beach. 

This is a great location for doing some fishing in a safe harbour with a very knowledgable host to point you in the right direction. The large reserve, just across the driveway is also a real bonus, especially if you are travelling with active kids. However, the layout of the park is basic.and may well not be to everyone's taste. We enjoyed our brief visit.
