The Arataki Visitor Centre in West Auckland is an excellent base for exploring our native bush, with a variety of walks to choose from.

The visitor centre was cloased when we arrived in the late afternoon, but we were able to take in the view from the viewing platform, and have a look around outside.

Check the visitor centre website for more information about the various walks that you can do - they vary from about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.

The visitor centre feature Maori culture, with some beautiful carvings on display. Be warned though, if you're travelling with young children, the Pou (carved pole) at the entrance doesn't leave anything to the imagination.

Self-contained motor caravanners can stay overnight in the large sealed carpark.
